The studio visit

I like studio visits because they set the tone of a new art series and the tone of some of the paintings. I noticed during a studio visit that some paintings didn’t draw attention and I try to find why this painting works less or draws less attention.

Generally I love to start a visit with all paintings reversed. I built my little scenario beforehand to determine in which order I would show the paintings. I reveal the paintings progressively and there is this activity with the paintings being manipulated, and that is something the museum cannot do. Since the studio is a place of fabrication, you can still manipulate the painting like an object.

You can compare the studio visit to a live performance in music, because you can feel reactions, you can sense the delight or disappointment, or simply that the painting is a subject of discussion. So it’s nice to have this direct connection with the viewer, cit’s interesting to have these special moments with someone who wants to discover your work.
